Hedgehogs are widely found in Britain and many of us have been lucky enough to spot them in our gardens. They spend their days sheltering in their nests and come out at night to look for food, shuffling around and grunting. They are surprisingly quick runners & climbers and can even swim! Famous for their prickly spines, they can curl into a little ball, tucking in their heads and legs protecting these vulnerable parts of their bodies.
Their spines are soft when they’re born, but quickly grow longer & sharper. After about 3 weeks they are safe to explore with their mother as she searches for food. Hedgehogs eat small mice, snails, lizards, frogs, eggs and sometimes even snakes.
