They are protected nowadays, but are still threatened by pollution & habitat loss. Otters had virtually disappeared from England, but thanks so huge conservation efforts to reduce pollution in our water ways, they are coming back in greater numbers.
These strong swimmers have waterproof fur which keeps them warm. Their ears & nostrils close which is very handy for keeping the water out. They are talented hunters & have a unique way of opening shellfish, floating on their backs and using a rock to smash open the shell. Otters love to play & splash about in the river - spotting an otter is truly a treat for any wildlife lover.
