Known as Killer Whales, Orcas are in fact the largest members of the dolphin family.  Ancient sailors named them Whale Killers after seeing them hunting other whales, and the name stuck.

Orcas live in all our seas and are highly intelligent, working together to hunt their prey. They live a long life, with female orcas living to around 80 years of age.  Unlike us they can't enjoy a deep sleep as they don't breathe automatically.  They need to remain alert, so they sleep with one eye open and the opposite side of their brain still awake.

Orcas are affected by noise pollution, by waste in the oceans and they also get caught in fishing nets accidentally.  Orcas need our help to continue to survive in our world.
